Persevering biodiversity
88% of deforestation are caused by farming for human food and animal feed [FAO], resulting in great loss of biodiversity on different continents. This man-made extinction will only worsen with increasing global population.
Ruhr-Biotech enables affordable protein production that does not require vast land. Our typical photobioreactor that occupies around 1 m² can produce more protein than 150 m² of soy farm each year, cancelling the demand of burning down the same area of tropical forest.
Alternative food production
Conventional farming depends strongly on stable climate. The increasingly harsh climate pattern in recent years has been a reminder for humanity to be prepared for the worse to come. The climate anomalies play a significant role in rising global undernourishment, which has quickly increased from 7.6% in 2018 to 9.2% in 2022 [FAO].
The system from Ruhr-Biotech produces edible protein independently of location and climate. This feature will be essential to safeguard our future, in which traditional farming will not guarantee our food security.
Food security unaffected by geopolitics
In recent years we have seen how man-made conflicts could affect global food prices. Countries that has net import for food suffer unnecessarily from these armed conflicts, resulting in hungers even far away from the warzones.
Ruhr-Biotech provides decentralized protein production that can be installed in large scale in any location with electricity infrastructure. Regions with renewable energy potential (e.g., north-western coast of Germany with offshore windfarms, southern Spain with solar power stations) can produce fundamental food with periodic energy surplus to strengthen their national food security.
